Converse is an American shoe company, which has been in existence for well over a century. Converse footwear is recognisable by a number of key features, in particular: the All Star's rubber sole, the star logo, the wrap-around strip and the smooth rounded top. Their products are now sold in over 160 countries worldwide.

Founded in Massachusetts, U.S.A. in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse as the Converse Rubber Shoe Company, they did originally only produce rubber shoes. But by 1915, Converse had begun manufacturing tennis shoes and in 1917 the Converse All-Star basketball shoe was introduced.

In 1921, basketball player Charles H. "Chuck" Taylor walked into the Converse offices and they gave him a job as a salesman and ambassador to promote the brand throughout the U.S. and in 1932 his signature was added to the All Star patch on the classic, high-top boot. In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a basketball match, playing for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks, while wearing his pair of Converse “Chucks”. Over the decades, Converse became an iconic brand and came to be seen as the essential sports shoe and for many years were the official shoe of the N.B.A.

Canvas-rubber shoes regained their popularity in the 1980s as the casual footwear of choice and America's Original Sports Company, as they like to be known, benefitted greatly. Purchased for over US$300 million in 2003 by Nike, the 80’s revival of the mid 2000’s saw Converse quickly become a cultural phenomenon once again and have remained so ever since.
